Rev. Dr. Sheldon McGowan

Dr. Sheldon McGowan, a proud native of Texas, accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the tender age of eight. His journey in ministry and education has been marked by unwavering faith, dedicated service, and a profound commitment to community growth.
In May 2024, Dr. McGowan began his current role as Senior Pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to this, he faithfully served as Senior Pastor of Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas, where he initially led as Interim Pastor for six months before being called to the senior role in 2017.
Educational and Professional Background
Dr. McGowan is both a spiritual shepherd and an accomplished educator. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree, Master’s degree and a Bachelor of Science degree.
His educational career includes roles as an Assistant Principal at Peete Elementary School and High School History Teacher and Head Forensics Coach at Tyler High School, both located in Tyler, Texas.
Ministry Leadership and Church Growth
Under Dr. McGowan’s visionary leadership, Greater Macedonia experienced notable spiritual and numerical growth. The church underwent significant expansion and renovation to accommodate its increasing membership and expanding ministries. The congregation averaged 80 worshippers weekly, with a vibrant youth department of approximately 40 children. The church became known for its active outreach efforts, including monthly nursing home visits, college care packages, canned goods and sock drives, and various community service projects.
Community Engagement
Dr. McGowan has been deeply involved in both religious and civic organizations. His leadership roles have included:
· President of the Texas Educational Baptist State Convention Youth Department
· Youth Minister for the East Mt. Olive District Association
· President of the Unity Fellowship in Marshall, Texas—an alliance of seven churches providing scholarships to local youth
· City Representative for the Association for Texas Public Educators
Personal Life
Outside of his pastoral and educational responsibilities, Dr. McGowan is a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Sis. Kyesha McGowan, whom he married in November 2023. In 2024, they joyfully welcomed twin daughters, Skye and Sh’Kye, into their family. A lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Dr. McGowan also enjoys baking desserts in his leisure time.
